The opportunity

As one of the world's leading grains research organisations, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) plays an integral role in driving research outcomes and innovation that directly benefit Australia's grain industry. The GRDC's purpose is to invest in research, development and extension (RD&E) to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.

Kowalski Recruitment (KR) is looking for an outstanding Data Platforms Officer that will be supported by the Data Management and Analytics Core Framework that spans the whole GRDC business. Day to day responsibilities include connecting with people within GRDC and the wider research community to locate and catalogue GRDC research data assets, while understanding how best to leverage these assets for future investments in collaboration with management. This is an exciting opportunity to support cutting-edge research in the Australian Agricultural sector and connect with leading researchers both nationally and internationally.

This role involves seeking out and cataloguing valuable grains research data assets generated through GRDC investments. These comprise a vast and varying array of dataset types. In doing so, you will play a vital part in leveraging GRDC data assets by making them findable and facilitating research, development and extension efforts.


  • Locating and validating data assets from a variety of sources including but not limited to the Investment Management System, internal GRDC databases, research partners and other sources.
  • Cataloguing, storing and managing key data assets to achieve effective data findability, integration, sharing, referencing and analysis
  • Assist in the identification of key data assets for the purpose of leveraging them for new purposes and analysis opportunities.
  • Liaise with all relevant stakeholders to determine data scope, which spans up to 25 years.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure knowledge of the library throughout the research community.
  • Ensuring data asset accessibility requirements are understood, documented and upheld.
  • Assisting with training to ensure data policy compliance across GRDC.
  • Supporting GRDC data management planning and processes.
  • Contribute to Enabling Technologies projects/ business cases.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3+ years’ experience in data management.
  • A demonstrated understanding of metadata, with a foundational understanding of data licensing and IP considerations.
  • Relevant qualifications in a quantitative field (e.g. data science, statistics) and a good understanding of data governance and management frameworks.       
  • Highly developed presentation, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to influence, motivate and develop others.
  • Strong analytical skills and the capacity to leverage off external expertise and think strategically, including the ability to provide sound project and issue advice.
  • An ability to work flexibly and adaptively in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.

You will need to be an Australian citizen and be prepared to travel interstate occasionally.
